As an agent for Mayflower, a national moving company with 85 years of experience, McGhee acknowledges that the affiliation provides him access to a network, equipment, the expertise and personnel needed to carry out safe, quick and efficient local, intrastate and cross-country moving services. “It helps us in making your moving experience simple and stress-free.”
Involved in the industry for more than 16 years, McGhee began his career in moving with the Mayflower conglomerate as a summer job. Throughout the years he said he has worked as a general helper, delivered appliances, worked in the residential area, became a driver, worked in the warehouse, worked as a dispatcher, served as manager, coordinator and administrator.
“I have worked in every capacity and area of the company. The only thing left for me to do was to own and operate my own.” In November of 2010 the Cleveland native purchased the business from a woman that had one trailer and two helpers. Today, a little more than a year later McGhee the only African-American owned affiliate owns two tractors, two trailers and one straight truck. He employs seven part time employees.
Located in the Plum area in a 9,000 square foot facility, McGhee describes his specialties as residential, commercial, logistics, storage and specialty moving. He services Pittsburgh and the nine county region as well as West Virginia. He also pointed out that because of his involvement with Mayflower he has the capabilities to relocate families and businesses anywhere within the United States.
McGhee said that no matter how small or large the job he wants people to view his company as their mover. “We provide personal attention and take care of our clients as if we are moving our own personal items,” he expressed. He said his fully licensed and bonded workers make the moving process easy by pairing you with a relocation coordinator who will provide seamless, start-to-finish assistance. Services include everything from providing a written estimate of moving costs to helping with destination work after the relocation. For residential customers he explained that their services can include fully packing, unpacking and placement inclusive of disconnecting and connecting electronic items and the loading and unloading of goods.
Considering his company a leading provider in the moving and logistics industry, he says his uniformed staff is well equipped to provide commercial businesses the most economical and professional services they need and expect every step of the way. “Other than the traditional commercial services we have experience in moving trade show booths for Fortune 500 companies, medical equipment and the equipment and amenities needed to make hotel moving simple.” He indicated that he is currently involved in moving and setting up a new hotel in the Allegheny County area. His trucks are furnished with air ride equipment and with hydraulic gate gear that provides dock-to-dock delivery.
Assurance that everything is delivered on time is key to McGhee Moving and Logistics, according to McGhee. “Our staff is trained in supply chain management and distribution operations and inventory management process to make logistics coordination headache free for the client.”
Designed to handle short and long term storage needs, McGhee says his storage experts have years of experience planning and carrying out residential and commercial storage operations of all types. Services include household, commercial and warehousing.
Pleased to be located and working within the Pittsburgh region, McGhee says his affiliation with Mayflower, a company with over 80 years of experience that offers a full spectrum of services within a network of more than 650 locations is an added value to the community.
When planning for a move, McGhee suggests taking all factors into consideration. “Timing is important,” he points out. “Mid-May to September, and the beginning and end of each month all times of the year are particularly busy for moving companies and may require more flexibility and advanced scheduling.” He also recommends notifying the moving company four to six weeks in advance of the moving date.
A few household moving tips that he suggests include getting rid of everything you don’t need before you move, being organized and ready for the packers and movers, arranging to close accounts at your local bank and opening accounts in your new hometown, completing a change-of-address kit from the post office and having your utilities shut off the day after loading.
Pleased with the progress his company has made for the time he has owned it, McGhee says his focus is safety for his workers and drivers, passing his inspections and recruiting more business. “I’d like to have more major contracts like corporations. That is just one reason why I am working hard to get my name out there.” He said being a certified minority business enterprise, a member of the American Moving and Storage Association and a member of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania has been helpful and his plans are to continue to be visible. I want people to know that no matter where they are moving to or from, we are there for them every step of the way.”
