Spring Fling

MAY 18—The August Wilson Center for African American Culture will host its Spring Fling event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at 980 Liberty Ave., Cultural District. This is an event to announce the 2012-2013 season. There will be a blood drive, vendors and various performances. For more information, visit www.augustwilsoncenter.org.

Youth Conference/Benefit

MAY 18—The Ozanam Basketball Program will host a Youth Leadership Conference from 5-8:30 p.m. at Ammon Recreation Center, 2217 Bedford Ave., Hill District. This is to promote leadership skills for the youth and equip them with life skills to face tomorrow’s challenges. There will also be a benefit dinner and silent auction held on May 19 from 6-9 p.m. at Damon’s Bar & Sports Grill, US Steel Tower. March for Justice

MAY 19—Lighthouse Cathedral will host a March for Justice for Kevin Buchanan at 10 a.m. at 810 Fisher St., Mt. Oliver. Buchanan was gunned down in April. This is also in response to several of the shootings and homicides that have occurred in the inner city. For more information, call 412-431-2230.

Celebration of Reading

MAY 19—The United Black Book Clubs of Pittsburgh will host the 9th Annual Celebration of Reading from 12-4 p.m. at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Homewood Branch, 7101 Hamilton Ave., Homewood. The special guest will be Brother Abdul Akbar Muhammad, the Nation of Islam International Representative, and he will speak on the topic: “Migration: Africans in Motion-Resisting, Rebelling, Running, Transforming and Forming. There will also be a reception, where Muhammad will discuss the Cuban Medical School Scholarship program. Registration is request by May 17. MYDC Gala

MAY 19—The Manchester Youth Development Center will host its 3rd Annual MYDC Gala at the Rivers Casino, Ballroom, 777 Casino Dr., North Shore. Several community leaders will be celebrated for their efforts through the Robinson Award, named after the center’s founders. Registration is required. Highmark Walk

MAY 19—Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield will host the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community at Stage AE, 400 North Shore Dr., North Shore. This is a 10th anniversary event to benefit 70 health and human service organizations in Western Pennsylvania. Registration is requested. Community Conversation

MAY 22—The African American Men And Boys Advisory Board of The Heinz Endowments will host a Community Conversation from 6-8 p.m. at Hosanna House, 807 Wallace Ave., Wilkinsburg. This will be a community dialogue with noted civil rights scholar John A. Powell. Larry Davis, of the University of Pittsburgh, will be the moderator. Registration is required, but the event is free. Farmers’ Markets

ONGOING—Citiparks will host its Community Farmers’ Market from 3:30-7:30 p.m. at five locations around the City of Pittsburgh. Monday through Friday, for the next five months, markets will be located in East Liberty, South Side, Carrick, Bloomfield, Beechview, Downtown and the North Side.
