The Neighborhood Academy hosted internationally renowned Climatologist Warren M. Washington, PhD, chief scientist of the Climate and Global Dynamics Division of the National Center for Atmosphere Research.
Before an audience of 60 high school students, Washington spoke about his outstanding career in the atmospheric sciences, including his recent achievement as the first African-American to receive the National Medal of Science, the nation’s most prestigious scientific award.

“Dr. Washington’s career exemplifies the core values of The Neighborhood Academy—hard work, academic integrity, and a strong sense of community,” said Rev. Tom Johnson, The Neighborhood Academy’s headmaster and co-founder. The forum exposed students to the multiple contributions that African-Americans can make in the scientific fields, and taught them about atmospheric modeling, global warming and climate change.
The speaker encouraged the students to take a broad perspective while exploring their place in the world. “Most of all,” he said, “take advantage of the wonderful opportunity you have here at The Neighborhood Academy to learn.” After his address, senior representatives Marcus Denson, Ilana Campbell, Shawn Terrell and Kenya West presented their year-long science capstone projects to Washington.

The Neighborhood Academy is an independent, faith-based high school designed to help low-income youth become first-generation college students. Our extended school day creates a stable foundation for learning combined with an intensive college-preparatory curriculum stressing ethical reflection and critical thinking. We provide three meals a day, transportation to and from school, and a full range of required arts and athletics activities. In our 11th academic year, we continue to have 100 percent of graduates accepted to four-year colleges and universities, while 90 percent have graduated within five years or are currently matriculated.
