ATLANTA (NNPA)—The St. Louis American Newspaper was awarded the highly coveted John B. Russwurm Trophy at The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) Annual Merit Awards ceremony June 22 at the NNPA 2012 Annual Convention in Atlanta.
With the award comes the title “Nation’s Best Black Newspaper.” The St. Louis American has captured the distinguished honor seven of the past 14 years.

The award is given based on the most points scored in the 19 categories of the NNPA’s Annual Merit Awards. The St. Louis American came away with seven first place, one second place and one third place prizes among the categories in addition to the Russwurm.
Category prizes for the St. Louis American included:
Ada S. Franklin Best Lifestyles Award—1st Place, Armstrong-Ellington Best Entertainment Section Award—2nd Place, Best News Picture Award—1st Place, Best Use of Photographs Award (Broadsheet)—1st Place, Don King Best Sports Section Award—1st Place, John H. Sengstacke General Excellence Award—1st Place, Leon H. Washington Best Special Edition Award—1st Place, Robert L. Vann Best Layout and Design Award (Broadsheet)—1st Place, and W.A. Scott, II Best Circulation Promotion Award—3rd Place.
The St. Louis American also earned the inaugural Best Website award during the 2012 Millers Coors Messenger Awards Ceremony.
Other multiple winners for the 2012 Merit Awards included the Philadelphia Tribune, the New Pittsburgh Courier, the Miami Times and the Chicago Defender.
It was a big night for Real Times Media newspapers who received 11 awards. The New Pittsburgh Courier won awards for Best Editorial Cartoon (2nd Place), Best Lifestyle Section (2nd Place), Best Use of Photographs—Broadsheet (3rd Place), and Best Business section (3rd Place). The Chicago Defender won awards for Best News Story (3rd Place), Best Layout and Design—Tabloid (3rd Place), Best News Picture (2nd Place), Best Layout and Design—Tabloid (3rd Place), and Best Use of Photographs—Tabloid (3rd Place). The Michigan Chronicle won awards for Best Editorial (3rd Place and Best Column (3rd Place).
The NNPA was formed in 1940 and has grown to include more than 200 African American newspapers within the organization.
“Our member newspapers continue to improve each year, making the Merit Awards increasingly difficult to judge,” said Karl B. Rodney, chairman of the NNPA Foundation. “The Merit Awards recognize the excellent work NNPA papers produce on a consistent basis.”
