OVERTIME

:10 Pitt’s Varsity Letter Club has honored outstanding letter winners since 1961. On Oct. 12, the tradition will continue as the club honors seven outstanding past athletes including quite possibly the most loved basketball coach in Pitt history, Tim Grgurich; and Roger Kingdom, one of the greatest and most dominant Olympians of all time. This year’s honorary letter winner award will go to long time athletic trainer Tony Salesi. For additional info call 412-624-4141.

:09 And while you’re dialing that number put your vote in to have Sam Clancy’s uniform retired for his greatness as one of the university’s all time basketball stars.

:08 Here’s what I don’t get. Why are so many of you up in arms over the replacement ref’s in the NFL. No. 1. Most of you don’t know the rules to begin with…no you don’t, shut up! No. 2. Every ref had to start somewhere. And No. 3. Who really cares as long as the Steelers win?

:07 Recently, (and no, not often) I was at Hooters in Monroeville watching a Steelers game and of course enjoying the wings. (I mean that’s why you go, for the games and the wings right?) Anyway, after the game I was introduced to a whole new world of crazy. Do these people know that the WWF and all things pro wrestling is fake? I know you know…but there’s 100 regulars out there that truly believe a 300-pound man can jump off a top ring rope and land on another man’s neck and not kill him…C’mon man!

:06 What about O.J.? What’s wrong with you people …don’t ya care anymore? Sorry juice!

:05 You will never, never, never…ever hear that I am not an equal opportunity brother. Not only is Deborah Walker a friend of mine, (as is Connie Parker) but she is very qualified to be the next president of the Pittsburgh NAACP. Good Lord the only person on the planet with more credentials is Obama. And I only get one vote.

:04 Speaking of Hooter’s…and I was (you’re really starting to get the hang of this thing?) The other thing you get at Hooter’s is the opportunity to see beautiful women. And two of Pittsburgh’s finest were on hand to watch “Big Ben” dismantle the Raiders, or so I thought. To my amazement these two ladies were there to eat, not watch the game. You know I had heard about women like this but never met them in person. To my two new Hooters friends Iona and Dansette nice to meet ya and you’re now in “The Locker Room” as future Overtime readers (see I told you people some of us go for the wings.)

:03 OK, here it is… for the last damn time!! There are somewhere between 5-10 radio stations of status in Allegheny County that either report sports or talk sports and not one of them have a local Black, Hispanic or female host, co-host or reporter (not to the best of my knowledge) and since they ran my man John Burton out of town “we” got nothin! Yet again you ask why this matters. Here’s a bunch of reasons you should know: 90 percent of the Steelers… Black; 70 percent of the Pirates…Black or Latino; 70 percent of Pitt Football…Black; 99 percent of Pitt Basketball…Black; 90 percent of Duquesne Basketball…Black; 80 percent of Pgh Power Arena Football… Black; 100 percent of Pgh Force Women’s Pro Football…Women; 100 percent Pgh Passion Women’s Pro Football…Women; 50 percent of all other sports teams in Allegheny County…Black, Hispanic or Women. And the end results just to be fair: No opposing voice, idea or perspective; No true understanding of the other side; Lack of job opportunities to the other groups; No travel to play-offs, championships, world series, super bowls, national events, nothin; No chance to take your family to any of those amazing locations and events (and yes family does go); No local dinners, banquets, special events; At least 4 or 5 guys holding down at least 3-5 jobs reach across the board…that’s a pay check for every job. “They” know you’re not going to do anything that’s why they do it. No it’s not life and death but it is important! No disrespect to any of my colleagues but it is what it is!

:02 “Boys and Their Toys”…Lets get it on! The last great summer Car Cruise is coming at ya Sept. 30, at Pep Boys on Rt. 22 in Monroeville (across from Home Depot). This is going to be large. The Champions and The Pgh United Rays Corvette Club along with the Fabulous Allure Models will present a car wash…(weather permitting) and a car cruise, $5 donation for the cruise, $5 donation for the wash. Proceeds to benefit Champions Toys for Tots Xmas Party and Toy Give Away for Disadvantaged Youth. For info, call 412-628-4856.

:01 Saving the best for last—“Heavens Hoopers” will now be joined by Mr. Kenny West. And I identify him as Mister because he was the ultimate gentleman and most deserving of the title. And if ever there was a guy that you would never hear a bad word about it was “West” as he was well known. But don’t get it twisted here’s why he makes the team…6’2” about 200 pounds, strong as two men, fundamentally sound, the “Dennis Rodman” of the Connie Hawkins Summer Basketball League, all he cared about was getting rebounds, putting the “D” on your butt and winning. I am proud to call “West” a lifetime member of “The Dons” and the Champions Basketball Family. You are gone and will never be forgotten and trust me when I tell you Kenny Durrett, Armon Gilliam, Darryll Gissendaner and the rest of the squad will welcome you to the team with open arms!!!

Game Over
