New Pittsburgh Courier honors 50 Men of Excellence

PITTSBURGH, Pa.—The New Pittsburgh Courier will host its 2012 Men of Excellence Awards Reception Oct. 25 in the Main Ballroom of the Fairmont Pittsburgh Hotel.

This year, the New Pittsburgh Courier is also pleased to be honoring Aaron Walton as the 2012 Legacy Award Honoree. The Legacy Award is reserved for individuals who have reached achievements above and beyond others, while also dedicating themselves to giving back to those less fortunate.

Mr. Walton retired as the senior vice president of corporate affairs after 40 years with Highmark.

He currently serves as the interim co-director of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture as well as the chairman of its board of directors. During his active business career, Walton has served on approximately 35-40 boards. He commented, “There are so many organizations that are trying to do important work in the community and I just wanted to do the best I could do with those organizations.”

Walton currently serves on the boards of PA State System of Higher Education, California University of PA, Bethlehem Haven Homeless Women’s Shelter, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, 100 Black Men of Western PA, Kappa Endowment Scholarship Fund, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Sire Archon, Rho Boule, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.

The reception will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and will end by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Doris Carson Williams, president of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Western PA, will serve as this year’s mistress of ceremonies.

Sheila Beasley, an inspirational vocalist and motivational speaker, will perform a song dedicated to the honorees. Beasley is a lead vocalist with the gospel group, Spirit Filled Music Ministries. In addition, she is also a public relations and outreach director at the University of Pittsburgh.

Corporate sponsors for the awards luncheon are Highmark, UPMC, United Steel Workers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Slippery Rock University, Visit Pittsburgh and Winchester Thurston.
