Opening Ceremony
One Hood Media Academy presents its Opening Ceremony featuring David Banner at 7 p.m. at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, 980 Liberty Ave., Cultural District. This opening ceremony will feature a special conversation with Grammy award winning rapper David Banner. Banner will discuss the image of Black males in hop-hop, his career and the state of hip-hop. Along with Banner there will be performances from Paradise Gray, and academy graduates Cameron Layne and Jordan Montgomery. Jaisiri X will serve as the host. Glamazonia
FashionAFRICANA and The August Wilson Center for African American Culture presents Glamazonia at 980 Liberty Ave., Cultural District. This is a photography exhibition paying tribute to African beauty and hairstyles by Paris-based photographer Mario Epanya. He celebrates African ancestry and customs by highlighting his interpretation of the aesthetics and shapes used by African ancestors for ceremonial and special occasion dress. The exhibition showcases more than 30 images of Black women from contemporary full color to vintage black and white. It also features sculptures by Vanessa Germany and garments by FashionAFRICANA. From Slavery to Freedom
The Senator John Heinz History Center and BNY Mellon present “From Slavery to Freedom” Exhibition from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at 1212 Smallman St., Strip District. The exhibition explores more than 250 years of African American history and highlights the history of Anti-Slavery movement, the Underground Railroad and the impact of 19th century activism on the modern quest for civil and human rights in Pittsburgh.
