If you were trawling the Twitterverse last week—and you were on your toes– you may have seen the since deleted tweet Morris Chestnut posted saying “It’s time to get familiar with the Black Panther character.”

Does that mean he has to get familiar with the character, which is rumored to be making an appearance in The Avengers 2, because he’s had discussions about the role, or that everyone should for the same reason?

Director Joss Whedon isn’t saying and the character doesn’t appear in the IMDB cast list—but Anthony Mackie, as The Falcon (rumored) does.

And even if the Black Panther does appear, does that foreshadow a larger feature film to follow? Well, to Chestnut’s directive, here’s a quick character summary:

The title “Black Panther,” also called T’Challa, is chieftain of the Wakandan Panther Clan. As chieftain, the Panther is entitled to eat a special Heart-Shaped Herb, which in addition to his mystical connection with the Wakandan Panther God, grants him superhumanly acute senses, strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and agility.

Thanks to his connection to the Panther deity he is also resistance to magic. His senses are so powerful he can pick up a prey’s scent and memorize tens of thousands of individual ones.

The character first appeared with the Fantastic Four, before several of his own story arcs were created. He also, obviously, appeared with the Avengers.

But I don’t know…Is Chestnut the best choice here? Idris Elba can’t do it—he’s already part of the Avengers universe, returning as Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World in November.  Isaiah Mustafa seems to be free—as for entirely different reasons, is Wesley Snipes, though he may be too old for the role.

What say you, Courier Readers? Who should play the Black Panther?

Avengers 2 is in preproduction in the UK right now and scheduled for a May 1, 2015 theatrical release.
