(CNN) — Chris Brown and Rihanna have gone from publicly canoodling to tweeting about the harsh reality of romance in less than three months.

In February, the two were seen happily sitting together in the audience at the 2013 Grammys, confirming weeks of speculation that they were once again, at the very least, pretty friendly. Shortly before, Rihanna explained to Rolling Stone that she and Brown had repaired their relationship after he assaulted her in 2009.

Since then, onlookers have had a hard time keeping track of their relationship status.

Brown tried to offer clarity in a recent interview with Australian radio’s “The Kyle and Jackie O Show.” The singer, who turned 24 on Sunday, said he planned to celebrate his birthday “solo” with the hope “to see as many girls as possible.”

So does that mean he and Rihanna have split up? Brown didn’t go into details, and he also didn’t mention Rihanna by name, although the singer didn’t correct the radio DJs when they presumed he was referring to her.

“At the end of the day, shorty’s doing her thing, she’s on the road,” Brown said. “It’s always going to be love, but I’m just going to do me.”

Asked if he would consider Rihanna his soul mate, Brown replied:

“The way I look at it … I’m always going to love that person, but people have differences, and people have different wants and needs. At the end of the day, she’s a young girl. I can’t really be focused on ‘wife’-ing somebody that young. And I’m young too, so I can’t focus on that right now. I have to step forward and be a man and be the best Chris Brown I can be instead of worrying about whoever else is in my side pocket.”

On Wednesday morning, neither Brown nor Rihanna could resist tweeting, apparently to no one in particular, about matters of the heart. Brown posted:

“Sometime loving someone is too much! So loving from a distance will help everyone grow! Be blessed. Live ya life!”

And, shortly after, Rihanna tweeted:

“Settling is not an option! Nothing less than 100% loyalty, honesty, and respect!! Love ain’t for kidz.”
