New Horizon Theater, Inc. first brought Ray, Goodman & Brown to Pittsburgh seven years ago with original member Al Goodman who passed away suddenly in 2010 after a surgery. The concert was such a success that New Horizon Theater decided to bring the group back again.
Both the group and the audience were happy about that.
“Thank you for bringing us back to Pittsburgh, Joyce. You are our honorary ‘Special Lady,’” said the band in unison after launching into a soulful rendition of “Happy Birthday” to celebrate Meggerson-Moore’s birthday, which was earlier in the week.
In addition to Ray, Goodman & Brown’s performance, the evening included excerpts from two of New Horizon’s productions from the 2012-2013 season—“Nothing But the Blues” and “Black Pearl Sings,” performed by Leslie Howard, Chuck Timbers and Jacquea Mae, respectively.
“These are the kinds of shows we are doing and if you don’t come, this is what you’re missing,” said Howard.
New Horizon’s 22nd season will begin with Layton Gray’s “Black Angels Over Tuskegee.” The play tells the struggles that the Tuskegee Airmen endured in the armed forces.
In cooperation with the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial of the Greater Pittsburgh Region, the play will be shown on Sept. 14.
