The group has toured and performed at Atlanta’s Spelman College, St. Mark’s Angelican Church in Canada, as well as churches in Milwaukee, Memphis at the Greenwood CME Church, and the Cannon Theatre in a performance with the STAX Music Camp to celebrate STAX Records 50th anniversary. In June of 2011 the group won first place at the National Boys’ Choir Convention in Kentucky.
The Afro-American Boys’ Choir has also performed on radio and television programs. It recorded and performed with the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh and has released three CDs the most recent being “One Big Family” in 2011.
Auditions are open to all young males starting at the age of eight. Participants must have strong support from their parents, guardians or other relatives to ensure rehearsals and performances are met.
The choir traveled to Washington, DC on June 20 to perform at the U.S. Embassies of Ghana, Ireland, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. Congressman Mike Doyle arranged a walking tour of the U.S. Capital. The choir went to see the Martin Luther King Memorial.
“I see the choir continuing to grow. I hope it continues to grow and that the name continues to grow. The choir is filled with committed kids and it’s up to us how far we can grow,” Pam Johnson said. “The choir is not about whom we are, it’s the idea of positive Black men doing something positive. They are all musically talented and are role models. I love the choir, it’s my second family.”
