OBAP’s Aviation Career Education (ACE) summer programs providing middle and high school students exposure to aerospace through career exploration experiences, is accepting applications for academies in cities around the country and the Caribbean. The nationally recognized youth program co-sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE) operates from May through July.

ACE Academy, a component of OBAP’s Project Aerospace programs, is designed to offer an introduction to the aviation industry and aviation careers to middle and high school students. The goal is to provide an opportunity that will provide insight and hands on experience for students to learn the history of aviation, fundamentals of aerodynamics, the role of government in aviation, pioneers in aviation and the many careers available in the aviation industry. New to the program is the incorporation of Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). Students will learn aviation concepts tailored to their education in (STEM).

Another of the Project Aerospace programs, the Solo Flight Academy, allows students from across the country, varying in age, to embark upon two weeks of being fully submerged in aviation training, the outcome, to solo an airplane for the very first time. Most students are able to Solo (fly the aircraft as the sole occupant) during their two-week participation in the Solo Flight Academy held at Delaware State University from July 7-July 21.

About OBAP
Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1976 to enhance, advance and promote educational opportunities in aviation. From the outset OBAP has focused its greatest emphasis on preparing young people to realize a successful future and highlight the exciting potential available in aviation. To be certain, an aviation oriented group representing African-American and Minority concerns was neither new nor unique. Years earlier the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. and Black Wings in Aviation had been formed with similar goals and both continue to be very active today. OBAP’s unique approach to the concept was to build on the progress made in the military and general aviation arenas by expanding the cause within the airline industry. Recently OBAP has expanded its goals to include all careers in aerospace. OBAP has several programs for youth interested in aviation including Project Aerospace and Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy held in 22 cities across the country and Caribbean. Cheryl Chew is executive director and Captain Albert Glenn is chairman of the board. For more details, visit www.obap.org
