Thanks to the Presidential Scholarship, Miles attended Point Park University in 2008. He majored in Advertising and Public Relations with a minor in Digital Media Technology and graduated in 2012.

Miles was awarded the Community Service Award by the Clairton branch of the NAACP during the group’s annual human rights banquet on June 9.

The theme for the banquet was Education+ Determination  = Emancipation.

Donna Micheaux, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s assistant executive director for Organizational Leadership and Development, served as the keynote speaker for the event.

“My message to youth is to make sure they have plans to go to college, have fun in school and be involved, but learn to balance it with academics and read a book because it expands your vocabulary,” Micheaux said. “Study hard and do the best you can do, persevere and use your grit. Each of you can make a difference. Don’t let anything get in the way of God’s plan for you.”

“I knew I wanted to go to college it was always my dream,” Miles said. “I was blessed to get the Presidential scholarship and I’m happy to be in Clairton. I’m having fun doing what I love to do.”

Miles said auditions for CHANCE take place in September and the group’s next dance performance will be held on December 6 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Clairton Educational Center. The performance will take audience members on a journey through seven different musical cities including New Orleans and New York. Tickets for CHANCE performances are $3. All money raised from shows will be used to fund CHANCE’s Hero Scholarship Fund and to help with the group’s expenses.

CHANCE will hold another performance in May of 2014.

“I see big things for CHANCE and I’m ready to just go for it,” Miles said.
