Detroit (July 11, 2013) – Hiram E. Jackson, publisher of the Michigan Chronicle and Rod Doss, publisher of the New Pittsburgh Courier, were both recently elected to the Board of Directors of the National Newspaper Publisher Association (NNPA) at the organization’s annual convention. Both papers are part of a conglomerate of five (5) newspapers owned by Real Times Media, the largest newspaper organization in the NNPA.

“I am honored to have been elected to such an historic organization,” said Jackson who is also the CEO of Real Times Media. “In this digital age, I understand the challenges we face and I am excited to work collaboratively to create viable solutions that will benefit all NNPA members.

Since taking the helm of Real Times Media in 2006, Jackson has diversified the company by building a multi-media platform while maintaining the newspaper as the core focus of the business. Now, consisting of internet properties, newspapers, niche publishing, marketing services, archive licensing and premier events, under his leadership, the company has grown to become the leading provider of original print content for African American-related news, entertainment and lifestyle information.

With offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Memphis and Pittsburgh, the company produces more than 50 annual community-focused events in 27 markets around the country, creates nearly 100 specialty tabs and niche publications every year, and dispatches digital news to more than 400,000 individuals.

Real Times Media is built on iconic brands whose legacies extend back more than 100 years. The company also owns The Chicago Defender, the Atlanta Daily World, Memphis Tri-State Defender and FrontPageDetroit.com.

“I am glad to have visionaries like Hiram and Rod on the NNPA board,” said Cloves Campbell, Jr., chair of the NNPA board and the publisher of the Arizona Informant. “I admire the things that Real Times Media is doing and am certain that he’ll be an asset to the growth and evolution of the organization.”

Doss’ career with the New Pittsburgh Courier dates back to 1967 when he was appointed as a sales representative. His ultimate promotion to editor and publisher in 1997 came following the death of his mentor, legendary publisher and founder of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, John H. Sengstacke, who owned the Courier at the time. Doss has elevated the status of the publication into one of the most widely circulated African American newspapers in the country. The Courier also placed 1st in the Digital Excellence category at this year’s NNPA Merit Awards in front of the St. Louis American and Miami Times.

Dubbed the voice of the community, the Michigan Chronicle is one of the oldest and most prominent African American newspapers in the country. Founded in 1936, the Chronicle has been recognized five times as Best Black Newspaper in the country by the NNPA. With readership of 150,000 and a robust online platform, the weekly newspaper is committed to covering a community not totally served by mainstream media.

Established more than 70 years ago, today the NNPA consists of 200 newspapers with a combined readership of more than 19 million.
