MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – State Senate Minority Leader Vivian Davis Figures says she won’t apologize for her remarks about Republican candidates.

The Democratic senator from Mobile said Thursday that she stands by her statements and there is nothing that warrants an apology.

Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead has asked her to apologize for saying she thought racism played a part in the recent dominance of Republicans in Alabama politics.

Figures told the Over the Mountain Democrats on Tuesday that she felt a constant message against the federal government and President Barack Obama was racially motivated. She said Republican candidates for state and local offices had not used that message systematically against previous presidents.

Armistead said Republicans vote based on politics rather than race, and Democrats haven’t carried Alabama in a presidential election since 1976.
