With new changes to the Women, Infant, Children program, now more families will be eligible for assistance.
The Allegheny County Health Department announced this week that effective July 1; there will be an increase in income limits from 1.9 percent to 2.8 percent. As of May 31, WIC, a federally funded program for income and medically eligible pregnant women, postpartum mothers, breastfeeding mother and children under the age of 5, served 16,000 individuals.
“We are excited to be able to serve more clients,” Acting Health Director Dr. Ron Voorhees said in a statement released this week.
The income limits, which are based on family size, will go from an annual income of $20,665 for a family of one to $21,257; $27,991 to $28, 694 for a family of two; $35,317 to $36,131 for a family of three; $42,643 to $43,562 for a family of four; $49,969 to $51, 005 for a family of five: and $57,295 to $58,442 for a family of six.
WIC provides families with nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, food vouchers for infant formula; infant cereal; milk; eggs; cheese; juices; canned tuna, sardines, pink salmon; and more. And during the summer, additional vouchers are available for the purchase of fresh produce from Farmers Markets and Farm Stands.
