PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh’s August Wilson Center for African American Culture is running a $1.8 million deficit and seeking more money from a county sales tax fund as it struggles to schedule events due to its debts.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (https://bit.ly/1d2YzHs ) reports the arts center is seeking $425,000 in funding from the Allegheny Regional Asset District, an agency that distributes sales tax revenues to arts groups, libraries and other “regional assets.”
RAD’s executive directors, David Donahoe, says the center’s grant application indicates they have some events scheduled later this year, but not over the summer because “doing exhibits requires commitments in advance, and they just don’t have the resources to do that.”
The center was built with more than $13 million in tax dollars and has seen dwindling attendance.
Interim co-director Oliver Byrd says he remains “very optimistic” about the center’s future.
