The Brashear Bulls have two of the biggest and smartest offensive linemen in the area and their interior line is the strength of the team. Scott Evans, (6’3, 260), is a Harvard University recruit and Jordan Maben (6’0, 300) is also being recruited by Ivy League teams.

Maben was honored as Hines Ward’s Pittsburgh Positive Student Athlete of the week, March 2013. Ward established a partnership with Positive Athlete, a national organization based in Atlanta, to help recognize the accomplishment of those in the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Several factors separated Maben from the field as well as his teammates. Maben distinguished himself further in the classroom and in a leadership role. He maintains a 3.8 GPA and scored 1500 on his SATs. He is a member of SIA Students in Action Community Outreach and he squats over 500 pounds!

Joining Maben and Evans on the offensive line are Jeff Arnold (6’4, 270) and Cody Wagner. Coach Rick Murphy’s Brashear Bulls plan to “Ground and Pound” their way to a city championship.

Whether it’s at practice or during a game, University Prep coach Louis Berry knows for sure that his star running back, Abner Roberts, is the fastest on the field.

Roberts, the City League champion in the 100-meter dash, and receiver Marcus Johnson are two of the most dangerous offensive players in the state.

Johnson (6’2, 175) is being recruited by division I schools and had over 900 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 2012.

PERRY

The Perry Commodores are the defending City League champions and won nine titles since 1997, but this will be a long season if coach Bill Gallagher can’t find a quarterback.

Quarterback candidates are sophomore Shawn Rutherford, who is the cousin of former Perry and Pitt quarterback Rod Rutherford, and junior Desean McGhee, who is the brother of former Perry and current star quarterback at Howard University Greg McGhee.

Over the past three years, there wasn’t a single season in which Perry’s football team didn’t advance into the city league playoffs and the Commodores will rely heavily on senior running back Gary Reid. Reid is one of the best and most experienced players in the city.

WESTINGHOUSE

If the Westinghouse Bulldogs advance to the city league playoffs coach Monte Robinson should win Coach of the Year.

Last year starting quarterback Ronald Brown transferred to University Prep, so look for the Bulldogs to run the football early and often.

If speedster Rapheal Drummond (5’11, 195) can stay healthy he has the potential to lead the city league in rushing and touchdowns.
