MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Johnny Cash, influential blues guitarist Albert King and soul singer Carla Thomas are among the 13 new inductees of the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
Members of the Memphis music community announced the second-ever class of the Hall of Fame on Tuesday. The inductees, all of whom have strong ties to the city, will be honored at a Nov. 7 ceremony.
Cash, already a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recorded at the famed Sun Studio in Memphis, where Elvis Presley got his start.
Also on the list are soul-funk group The Bar-Kays, blues singer Kay Starr, rockabilly guitarist and producer Roland Janes, jazz pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. and songwriter David Porter.
Porter wrote dozens of hits for Stax Records, including Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin.'” He also wrote songs for Thomas.
The Hall of Fame inducted its first class of 25 music greats last November. Presley, blues guitarist B.B. King, R&B singers Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes, and rap group Three 6 Mafia were part of the inaugural class.
Inductees are selected by a national committee of authors, music historians and educators.
The Memphis Music Hall of Fame is administered by the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, which was developed by The Smithsonian Institution.
