Reverend Donald Marbury
There are ongoing stories about the negative actions by our sons, brothers and fathers, and other Black males and most of these negative acts should be disclosed. However the number of positive acts, accomplishments and achievements vastly out number the negative acts.
This week’s column is about a person that I have been privileged to know as a small child, young boy and teenager who loved and respected his father and mother. I witnessed a young man graduating from college, become a loving husband and devoted father, and receive his calling by God to become a pastor.
I have been a member of New Destiny C.M.E. Church since 1931 (until several years ago it was Carter Chapel C.M.E.) and every year we have a program titled “Family and Friends Day”. This year on Sept. 28, the church members decided to do something different and that was to invite a guest person. They overwhelmingly made the determination to invite a man who was born and raised in our church and now he is a minister. That man is currently is the senior pastor of St. John Ebenezer AME Church in Brunswick, Md., Reverend Donald Marbury.
Reverend Donald Marbury is definitely a prodigal son. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and first African-American editor of the Pitt News. His first employment was as news editor at WQED-TV and he was promoted to producer and host of the historic weekly show “Black Horizons”. He then left the TV station to attend Wesley Theological Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity, Exegesis and Systematic Theology in 2001.
Reverend Marbury also has his own production company “Under One Sky Media” and is an adjunct professor at Montgomery College in Maryland.
If you love good preaching and singing be sure to come to New Destiny C.M.E. Church located on the North Side, 1018 Bidwell St., on Sept. 28, and hear a Pittsburgh son, Rev. Donald Marbury at 1 p.m.
