Singer Usher is on the November 2013 cover of Men’s Health magazine, giving readers a preview of his upcoming role as Sugar Ray Leonard in a new film. At 34-years old, Usher says he weighed about 180 pounds when he accepted the role, but is now “cruising” his way down to the 170’s.
“I train like an athlete very day, believe it or not,” he comments. “My commitment to this character demands that I not only physically get ready, but also become him. The hair, the personality, the manner he conducts himself in – all that. He’s an incredible man.”
Sugar Ray Leonard was a world-renowned champion boxer during the 1980’s. He won several world titles in five weight divisions, and was the very first boxer to have earned more than $100 million in purses.
The film entitled Hands of Stone will be released in late 2014, and will also star actor Robert De Niro, who plays Sugar Ray Leonard’s Hall of Fame trainer Ray Arcel. The film’s plot will center on Leonard’s fight against Roberto Duran, and will include the famous Brawl in Montreal and the Revenge in New Orleans bouts.
