SHARIF BEY
Pittsburgh native Sharif Bey, an assistant professor of Art Education at Syracuse University, exhibits “Here & Now” at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild. Bey earned his PhD in Art Education from Penn State University. His studio work ranges from decorative/functional pottery to conceptual wearable ceramic works, which are influenced by ritual and identity.
This show is a true homecoming. Bey credits Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild with transforming his career path. He says, “I found an environment that wasn’t institutional, like school, but it wasn’t like hanging out at the mall either. It offered a different kind of structured environment. I was given 35 pounds of clay on that first day to sculpt with, and the idea of having unlimited resources was incredible to me.”
Bey received a Fulbright Scholarship, and after receiving his MFA, he returned to Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild as a teacher. After mentoring students much like himself, continuing the cycle of mentorship that remains a crucial aspect of his life, Bey moved on to pursue his doctorate. Today he lives in Syracuse, NY and continues to exhibit nationally and internationally.
“Here & Now” runs from Oct. 7-Jan. 3. A reception and artist talk are scheduled for Oct. 17 from 6-8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
