Comedian Loni Love sees live comedy as a simple art that is needed in today’s society.
“Some people don’t respect comics and comics get frustrated because they want to perform for people and entertain them,” said Love who can be seen regularly on the “Chelsea Lately” show, which is hosted by fellow comedian Chelsea Handler.
So when the spunky funny lady gets the chance to spread her unique brand of comedy to the masses, Love jumps at the chance.
Love recently made a three-night appearance at the Pittsburgh Improv as part of her “Love Him or Leave Him, But Don’t Get Stuck With The Tab” book tour.
“The book (which was published by Simon & Schuster) is a comedy relationship advice book. Women always ask me for relationship advice and I always tell them don’t get stuck with something they don’t want,” Love said of the book that was released in August and is receiving good reviews.
She sold copies of the book at the end of each of her Pittsburgh shows.
“I’ve been to Pittsburgh several times,” said Love. “The Pittsburgh Improv is a good club with a good atmosphere. I have been touring around the world for the past three years doing comedy. I like to do A-list clubs with a green room and the right amount of people to serve the audience and that has a good sound system that is made for comedy.”
Love, a Detroit native, got her start in comedy after leaving her job as an electrical engineer in 2003, although she was born with the rare ability to make people laugh.
“I was the worst engineer there was working on the assembly line at General Motors putting doors on the 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass,” she said to her Pittsburgh audience during her stand-up routine. “It came time for layoffs and I told my boss to lay me off and let someone else keep their job.”
She first caught America’s attention and heart when she appeared on the revised version of “Star Search,” that was hosted by Arsenio Hall. Love reached the finals and lost to a competitor.
That gave Love the push she needed to pursue her calling of becoming a comedian. She began her comedy career at the Comedy Store in California where she noticed a shortage of female comediennes.
“I like helping women and seeing people laughing. When I get on stage and make people laugh, it’s all worth it. It’s an honor for people to come to my shows,” said Love who now resides in California.
Since then, Love, 42, has covered the inauguration of President Barack Obama, worked as a correspondent for the short-lived CNN show, “D.L. Hughley Breaks The News,” “Tru TV Presents: Worlds Dumbest Criminals,” and “Whitney.”
“I didn’t have any idea that this would happen. I like to look out in the audience and see people laughing. People don’t realize beautiful they are when they laugh,” she said.
