The newest Home Goods opened on Oct. 20, in the former Borders Book Store, in Monroeville. If you like beautiful things for your home this is the store for you. The store opened at 8 a.m. and by the time I arrived around 8:20 a.m., all the carts were in use and the parking lot was packed. It is so good to have a Home Goods in the eastern part of the city.
In November the new theater will open in Monroeville Mall. It looks like it will be huge, Cinemark, Monroeville Mall opens to the public on Thursday, Nov. 7. Please check out their web site, there are a lot of discount days, something for everyone from families to seniors.
A new Red Robin opened right next to Barnes and Noble. It is beautiful and the décor is a little different than some of the others. It is nice to have another dining choice in the mall. There is a lot to find out by looking at a mall’s website.
I wish I had looked sooner so I could have shared the amateur photography contest that ends on Oct. 31. The prize is $1,000 and your photo will be displayed in the new theater. If you read this in time grab something from your portfolio and submit it. Nothing beats a failure but a try.
Also shopping malls have become the safe place for trick or treat. On Oct. 31, Monroeville Mall is inviting all children ages 1-12 to participate in Mall-O-Ween Treat Night. All of the community’s little ones from ghost to ghouls are invited to haunt the mall looking for treats. It is sad that the safest place now is so lit up. Us baby boomers had so much fun during Halloween.
I’m always happy to see new things happening at the mall that I grew up in. New stores are moving in and that is a good thing. For instance, Soma Intimates is coming to the mall. Ladies we can go there and get fitted for our bras in 10 minutes. This store looks a little more “mature” than the current Vikkies Secret.
Looking at the Homewood area, the new senior citizen apartment building is coming along nicely; it is at the corner of Homewood and Hamilton, make sure you take a look. While new buildings are going up in some areas others have been leveled to the ground.
The old Don Allen Dealership has been torn down and so has the defunct Circuit City in Wilkins Township. I wonder what is going to happen to the old Sears on William Penn Highway.
Keep your eye on East Liberty it is constantly changing. I drove past the old Highland Building and it has been transformed. That corner at Centre and Highland Avenues is going to be beautiful lots of new retail space and high-end apartments are ready to be occupied. If you are wondering what happened to the Vanilla Pastry shop formerly on Centre Avenue, it has moved over to Braddock Avenue next to the lighting store.
