PITTSBURGH (AP) – State Sen. Jim Ferlo, a Pittsburgh Democrat, says he won’t run for re-election next year because of redistricting that combined his district with a suburban district held by Republican state Sen. Randy Vulakovich.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Ferlo announced his decision Tuesday.
The 61-year-old lawmaker has been prominent in Pittsburgh politics for more than 25 years. He was elected to city council in 1987 and was president of that body for a time before he was elected to the state Senate in 2001, replacing Leonard Bodack, another Pittsburgher.
Under redistricting, Ferlo would have to run against Vulakovich, who is from Shaler Township, one of several northern suburbs with a strong Republican base that are now included in the district.
