In 2011 when the Rivers Casino had a job fair to hire 100 table-game dealers, more than three hundred applicants turned out.
The tables are apparently still hot because a Dec. 2 job fair seeking to fill 20 positions in the casino’s food and beverage department elicited more than 100 applicants by 2 p.m. And anecdotal evidence indicates the Casino’s efforts to pull in a diverse crowd paid off.
“We’re extremely happy with the response, and we have a diverse pool of candidates,” said Rivers Vice President of Human Resources Andre Barnabie. “Some of them will be getting calls in the morning. And if they’ve completed the online process, that’s as close to hiring on the spot as you get.”
All of the positions were for spots in the Casino’s five restaurants and included cooks, servers, cocktail severs, bussers and stewards. Barnabie credited the casino’s community partners with helping to get the word out and for sending over applicants.

“We have over 65 community partners and more than 100 community contacts who get regular updates from us on job opportunities and that’s been working well for us,” he said. “We also work closely with the Northside Community Alliance, which actually does interviews at their site and then send us candidates. So we get a fair amount from the North Side.”
But the jobs themselves offer some enticement as well, including instant vesting in a Fidelity 401K, Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield coverage, 20 days paid vacation after one year and free parking.
Barnabie said there are no immediate plans for a job fair in other departments, but there are always jobs available.
“We’re always hiring,” he said. “We continue to grow. Just go to our website and see.”
