NEW YORK (AP) — New York Rep. Charles Rangel says he’s going to run for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.
The long-serving congressman made the official announcement Thursday.
The 83-year-old Harlem Democrat first won election to Congress in 1970, when he defeated legendary politician Adam Clayton Powell.
In 2010, the House censured Rangel for various financial actions, including failure to pay all his taxes.
In his most recent campaign in 2012, Rangel won a hard-fought Democratic primary against state Sen. Adriano Espaillat.
A heated, sometimes ugly race took two weeks after the June primary to be resolved, with Rangel winning by about 1,000 votes. He went on to handily win against his Republican opponent in the general election.
