WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) – A Brunswick County commissioner is continuing her efforts to block the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Color Purple” from being used in some English classes at West Brunswick High School.
Commissioner Pat Sykes says she objects to the language and the sexual content in the book that deals with such things as racism, sexual assault and violence against women.
Earlier, school officials rejected requests to remove the book. Brunswick County Schools Superintendent Edward Pruden has also rejected Sykes’ appeal. Pruden’s decision can be appealed and the school board will consider the challenge Jan. 3.
The book is on 11th-grade advanced placement English reading lists. Under district policy, students or parents can request alternate reading material if they object to a book’s content.
