The Harriet Tubman Guild has a rich history. On July 12, 1915, 12 Christian women met at the home of  Winona Idel and organized a club whose purpose was to help the Women’s Auxiliary of the Union Baptist Association (now known as the Allegheny Union Baptist Association), providing food and other household necessities for the Aged Ministers and Layman’s Home. They chose the name of Harriet Tubman, a young slave who was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. The organization was chartered and incorporated in 1936, as a non-profit. In 1942, the Harriet Tubman Guild was comprised of 350 women and the motto of the Guild was formulated: “Deeds, Not Words. Showing Our Love Through Service.”
