Founded in 1948 by Jessie Vann and Daisy Lampkins, who were the current president and vice president of the Pittsburgh Courier board of directors, the chapter has sponsored programs in the arts, spotlighting the works of Denise Graves, the Zora Neal Hurston exhibit, local musician Patricia Prattis Jennings and has been a strong supporter of the Heinz History Center and the August Wilson Center.  They have also sponsored educational programs at the Homewood Library and Westinghouse High School, as well as health workshops on organ donation and diabetes.

In 2008, the chapter raised over $96,000 in a Denise Graves benefit concert and distributed the proceeds of the event to the Afro-American Music Institute, The Hill District branch of the Carnegie library, The Neighborhood Academy and Three Rivers Youth.  Presently, the chapter is involved in mentoring projects at Obama Academy and Westinghouse House School as well as distribution of goods to the Haitian project.
