PITTSBURGH – Program to Aid Citizen Enterprise (PACE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Claudette R. Lewis, as the 2014-2015 chair of its Board of Commissioners. A former member of the Advisory Council, Mrs. Lewis has been a member of the PACE board since 2010.
“Claudette is and has been a boundless asset to the PACE organization and Pittsburgh community,” said Lucille E. Dabney, PACE executive director.
“Her commitment to the nonprofit community is well noted and we are excited for her to lead our ongoing commitment to provide culturally competent, high quality programs and consulting services that support the needs of the small and mid-sized community based organizations we serve.”
In addition to serving on the board of PACE, Mrs. Lewis was most recently the interim President and CEO of NEED from June 2012 through August 2013.
Claudette has also served on the boards of The Pittsburgh Foundation, City Theatre, WQED Multimedia, Three Rivers Youth, Mount Ararat Community Activity Center, New Voices Pittsburgh, Manchester Bidwell Corporation and is also a director of Fifth Third Bank. She retired in 2013 after 14 years as a member of the senior management staff of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.
“Building the organizational capacity of community-based organizations in this region is not a simple task,” said Mrs. Lewis.
“I am excited to be a part of PACE’s leadership and our outstanding team of Commissioners. Together, we will continue PACE’s efforts to strengthen local nonprofits as we also invest in our internal capacity and sustainability.”
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Lewis was educated in the New York City Public Schools and Hunter College. She pursued graduate studies in Spanish, Political Theory and Liberation Theology at the Center for Interdenominational Documentation in Cuernavaca, Mexico and taught English as a second language in Honduras.
For several years, she was the director of an after-school enrichment program in Washington, DC.
Claudette is married to the Reverend Dr. Harold Lewis; rector emeritus of Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside.
Since its inception, PACE has provided over $10 million in grants plus technical assistance to over 300 nonprofit organizations in isolated and neglected areas of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Community jewels supported by PACE in their early years includes: Kingsley Association, Pittsburgh Literacy Council, NEED, and Manchester Bidwell Corporation.
