With the premiere of a new reality show, SWV, the ’90s R&B trio, is focused on a return to the spotlight. The “docu-series,” titled “SWV Reunited” joins WE tv’s Thursday night lineup on Jan. 16 at 10 p.m. Featuring six one-hour episodes, “SWV Reunited,” follows Grammy-nominated Sisters With Voices (SWV) during their make-it-or-break-it comeback tour.
In the 1990s, the ladies of SWV — Cheryl “Coko” Clemons, Leanne “Lelee” Lyons and Tamara “Taj” Johnson (George) were on top of the music world. From the streets of New York to superstardom, they had a string of top ten hits including “I’m So Into You,” “Right Here,” “Downtown,” “Weak” and “You’re Always On My Mind.” With more than 15 million albums sold, a Grammy Award, an American Music Award nomination and 11 Billboard Music Awards nominations, SWV appeared to be unstoppable.
But while they seemed to have it all, the drama behind the scenes tore the group apart. It didn’t just end, it ended badly; and in 1998, the members of SWV went their separate ways.
In 2009, Johnson, who is married to NFL great, Eddie George, got major face-time on the hit CBS reality show “Survivor: Tocantins,” and proved to be a strong competitor. She was the only woman in her “tribe” to make it to “the merge” and became the sixth member of the jury.
“SWV Reunited” will follow the talented, but troubled trio as they write new music, tour and finally face the issues that once ended their friendship and their careers.
“The journey of SWV is the kind of real and personal comeback story our viewers love to see,” said Lauren Gellert, WE tv’s senior vice president of original production and development. “These dynamic women experienced enormous success together, then it all fell apart. United again, the stakes are higher than ever, and so — at times is the drama and tension. We can’t wait to present this fresh, new series to WE tv viewers.”
