On Jan. 25, at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel, the Jack and Jill of America Inc. Pittsburgh Chapter celebrated 70 years with an anniversary luncheon and vintage fashion show.
Prior to lunch, violinist Soleil Smith performed a wonderful musical prelude. Carlotta Burgess, Jack and Jill Pittsburgh Chapter president then took center stage and introduced the mistress of ceremony for the afternoon, KQV’s Elaine Effort.
While it was cold and snowy outside, the ladies inside had warm memories of times gone by with Jack and Jill of America. Candace Burgess sang the Jack and Jill Hymn and was accompanied by a Jack and Jill alumni, Derrick Turner. Before lunch was served Nancy Washington used a slide show to reflect on the picnics, the balls and the luncheons that so many of them enjoyed and attended as members of Jack and Jill. Rhonda Johnson, chapter chaplain, blessed the food and after lunch the fashion show began.
Fashions for the Vintage Fashion Show were from Vintage to Vogue, in McMurray, and Something Borrowed Boutique, in Bloomfield. With the help of great fashion, the audience was taken back to the best of fashion past. The models included Helen Davis, Rae Reynolds-Fussell, Madonna Hughes, Monica Hutcherson, Janine Frazier-Macklin, Karen Swift and Elise Yanders. The afternoon concluded with an awards presentation honoring many Jack and Jill members.
The Pittsburgh Chapter of Jack and Jill is the fourth oldest chapter in the nation. Jack and Jill America Inc. was founded in 1938 in Philadelphia. The Pittsburgh Chapter was founded in 1944 by the late Toki Schalk Johnson of the Pittsburgh Courier.
