On Saturday, Feb. 8, Nathaniel Grey, 18, was awarded his Eagle Scout rank from the Troop 379, St. James AME Church, Laurel Highlands Council, Boy Scouts of America, from Paul Harper, Scoutmaster. The ceremony took place at Miller Street Baptist Church in the Hill District.
Grey has overcome many obstacles in his young life.
Grey was raised by his aunt and uncle because his mother was a crack cocaine addict. He was just 2.5 pounds when he was born. After years of hospitalization, extensive medical interventions and much prayer, Grey will graduate high school this year and plans to go on and become a detective. His dream is to attend California University of Pennsylvania and major in criminal justice.
Grey is among the few African-Americans to achieve Eagle rank.
He is from Homewood and attends Career Connections Charter High School, where he is a senior.
He received letters, which were read at the ceremony, from President Obama, former President George Bush, the U.S. Attorney General’s Office, and the director of The FBI, all congratulating him.
To earn his Eagle badge, Grey pledged to clean up and renovate a city park, in the vicinity of Garfield, where a tragic fire claimed the lives of five people. The park is now dedicated to the lives of those who perished in the fire.
