The Time Is Now
FEB. 27—The Alzheimer Disease Research Center Alzheimer Outreach Center and Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Pennsylvania Chapter will host “The Time Is Now: Understanding the Relationship Between Alzheimer and Heart Disease” from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Hill House Kaufmann Center, 1835 Centre Ave., Hill District. This session is to reflect on the future health of the flourish community during Black History Month, to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and vascular disease, a risk factor of Alzheimer’s disease, and to advocate for those who are affected. Highmark Black History
FEB. 27—Highmark Inc. will host “An Evening with Pittsburgh Pioneers” at 5 p.m. at Highmark Inc., 120 Fifth Ave., Suite 2628, Downtown. The evening will include conversation and dialogue with a panel of local African-American pioneers, which includes Greg Spencer, Brenda Frazier, Rev. Johnnie Monroe and Sala Udin. Melanie Harrington, of Vibrant Pittsburgh, will be the moderator. Topics to be discussed include economic viability, education and political influence. Empty Bowls
MARCH 2—Just Harvest and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will host the 19th Annual Empty Bowls from 2-6 p.m. at the Rodef Shalom Congregation, Fifth Avenue, Oakland. This family-friendly event is designed to bring awareness to the growing issue of hunger. There will be food, activities, auctions and more. The event will benefit the Food Bank and Just Harvest. Scholarship
ONGOING—The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Girl Friends Inc. is accepting applications for its 2014 Scholarship. Girl Friends Inc. is a national civic and social organization. Water Polo
ONGOING—The Thelma Lovette YMCA will host Water Polo at 12 p.m. at 2114 Centre Ave., Hill District. Every Saturday in January, February and March the YMCA will offer water polo for middle school aged children. New Voices Conference
MARCH 6—New Voices Pittsburgh will host its 6th annual Kinks, Locks & Twists: Environmental and Reproductive Justice Conference” at Carnegie Mellon University, 5000 Forbes Ave., Oakland. The four-day conference will bring local, regional and national leaders together to discuss pertinent issues facing communities of color that impact the health and wellness of bodies, minds and the collective body as communities. Facilitators will explore connections between beauty, culture, policy, media and the economy, and personal environment, behavior change and community organizing. Registration is required. Conquering the Campaign Trail
MARCH 19-Chatham University’s Pennsylvania Center for Women & Politics will host “Conquering the Campaign Trail: Women of Color in Pennsylvania Politics” from 6-8 p.m. at Chatham University, Mellon Board Room, 1 Woodland Rd., Shadyside. This is aimed at increasing the participation of women of color in politics. Guests will learn from women who have turned their community engagement into a political campaign and find out how they can do the same. Registration is required.
