Project Prom Giveaway
MARCH 19—The Allegheny County of Department of Human Services will host its annual Project Prom Giveaway from 10-a.m.-4 p.m. at the Project Prom Shop, Century III Mall, 3075 Clairton Rd., West Mifflin. This event distributes new or gently used prom gowns and accessories to eligible girl high school students. The shop will also be open through March 20 from 3-8 p.m. On March 29, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the shop will be open to the public. No gown will be more than $25. Also on April 10, Project Prom for Gentleman will host a workshop on etiquette, along with a catered dinner for 100 at the Herberman Center at UPMC Shadyside. Attendees will receive a certificate for a free tuxedo rental. Registration is required for the Project Prom for Gentlemen event and space is limited. Brother 2 Brother Leadership Forum
MARCH 22—The Community Empowerment Association Inc. will host its Brother 2 Brother Leadership Forum at 10 a.m. at the Arts, Culture and Training Institute. 7120 Kelly St., Homewood. There theme is “My Brother’s Keeper: Improving the Lives of Black Boys & Young Men.” The forum will address keeping Black boys in school, out of jail and on a path of higher education. Our Health Matters
MARCH 25—DonateLifePA will host its Our Health Matters” Examining the Minority Health Crisis in Pittsburgh Conference from 8-11:30 a.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, University Club, 23 University Place, Oakland. Attendees will learn how they can help their communities address the health crisis in the Black community. There will be panel discussions, along with an opportunity to hear from organ recipients and donor families. Registration is required and breakfast will be provided. MARCH 28—Entries are due for the Edgar Snyder & Associates’ “Words to Be Heard” Scholarship Contest. High School seniors are asked to create programs that will prevent their peers from underage drinking, drunk driving or distracted driving. Entries can include videos, power point presentations, brochures, websites, essays and more. One grand prizewinner will receive a $5,000 scholarship. Leaders Breakfast
APRIL 2—Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh will host its 2nd Annual BIG Community Leaders Breakfast from 8-9:30 a.m. at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Office, 5989 Penn Circle South, East Liberty. Attendees will have the opportunity to join civic, government and school leaders, all while learning more about the BBBS agency. Registration is requested by March 26. ONGOING—The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Girl Friends Inc. is accepting applications for its 2014 Scholarship. Girl Friends Inc. is a national civic and social organization. Water Polo
ONGOING—The Thelma Lovette YMCA will host Water Polo at 12 p.m. at 2114 Centre Ave., Hill District. Every Saturday in January, February and March the YMCA will offer water polo for middle school aged children.
