Black History Month celebrations abounded in the city of Pittsburgh last month and a very unique celebration was held at Macy’s in downtown Pittsburgh. Macy’s celebrated Eras of Black Style on Feb. 26, right inside the Downtown store. The event featured fashion, passed hors d’oeuvre’s and a guest list that was a fashionista’s dream.
Macy’s saluted 10 decades of culture defining African-American style with an “in conversation” discussion featuring journalist and style expert Constance White, supermodel Beverly Johnson, founder of Fashion Africana and Utopia Models Demeatria Boccella and hosted by Stephanie Taylor of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.  They spoke on fashion’s past, present and future while models brought the looks to life.
Johnson, the first Black model to appear on the cover of Vogue, told the audience that she is where she is because of her support from the Black community. The panel also spoke on the second revolution of natural hairstyles and gave kudos to Pittsburgh’s own Naomi Sims, a super model trailblazer.
Audience members spoke on some very interesting elements of fashion and some became quite passionate about the lack of people of color in the fashion world. Those who made a $50 dollar purchase during the event received an exclusive preview copy of “Constance White Presents The Queens & Kings of Style,” a beautiful coffee table book on the ingenuity of Black American style.
