Over the years I’ve witness those who are former schoolmates, neighbors and even considered themselves friends cease speaking to each other and become physical over political candidates they were supporting, but had never met.
A number of years ago a neighbor was being evicted and I paid his rent to stop the eviction. A few years later I ran for a local political position and I sought his vote. He explained that he would vote for my opponent, and I asked why you don’ even know him? His response was, “He is a Democrat and you are a Republican.” I was tempted to remind him that I a Republican had paid his family’s rent to stop the eviction, but I just said ok.
I recall a neighbor, whose family really sacrificed for him to attend college and upon graduating did well financially, but would never allow his parents to visit his family in their affluent neighborhood, because he was embarrassed by their manner of speaking. That is the epitome of disrespect.
