PITTSBURGH (AP) – A federal court jury has told a federal judge in Pittsburgh they will return Monday to continue deliberating the claims of a young Black man who says three White Pittsburgh police officers violated his civil rights.
The eight-member panel spent Thursday listening to closing arguments by attorneys for Jordan Miles and officers David Sisak, Michael Saldutte, and Richard Ewing before spending Friday deliberating whether Miles was wrongly arrested and beaten on a frigid night in January 2010.
Miles contends he was set upon because he was black, had dreadlocks and, apparently, was assumed to be a drug dealer while walking to his grandmother’s to spend the night.
The officers claim they arrested and beat Miles, then an 18-year-old performing arts high school senior, but only because he resisted when they mistakenly thought he was an armed prowler.
