tax day-1
On Tax day, April 15th 2014 people around the United States and the world will be mobilizing for reductions in military spending. In the United States on this Global Day of Action Against Military Spending groups around the country will be calling on Congress to cut the military budget which already is more than the next biggest 13 spenders worldwide combined.
In Pittsburgh the American Friends Service committee PA, Coalition for Peace Action and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom will be holding a tax day event in Squirrel Hill, the corner of Darlington and Murray from 12 noon to 2:00pm to draw attention to the president’s FY2015 budget proposal that has taxpayers spending $549 billion for military programs, a 5 percent increase over last year – that’s 57 percent of our federal discretionary dollars.
“It is outrageous that in a time when the war is winding down that our military budget is increasing not decreasing.” says Edith Bell, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.” “This is at a time when our schools are hurting from lack of money and our education system is ranked at only 29th in the world and American college students are running up huge debts, an all-time high of 1.3 trillion, which they are struggling to pay off.”
Passersby will have the opportunity to take part in a penny poll, using pennies to demonstrate where they would like their tax dollars to go. At the end of the day we will take a count on what people in Pittsburgh see as their priorities.
