One of the major problems in the Black community is Black on Black violence. Be it deadly or not, in the streets and in the homes it’s something that all of us must continue to acknowledge, recognize and fight to correct.
Last week there was a rally and vigil that drew numerous people to stand against violence but not nearly enough. We need to pack the streets to acknowledge this problem. My hat goes off to Reverend Eugene Blackwell and wife Dina who continue to have their annual rally in Homewood, and the mothers of homicide victims who held a vigil in which several mothers, family members, friends and concerned citizens expressed their concern about the violence in Black communities throughout Pittsburgh and the country.
Speaking of the country. I was on WVON, a Chicago radio talk show, on which we talked about some of the key issues affecting Blacks. The host was very upset over the recent news coverage of a ring of young White drug dealers (in the Chicago area I guess) who were caught dealing drugs out of their homes in the suburbs. She was upset because she felt more media coverage should be geared toward White drug dealers. But a caller expressed something that is so true that many of us don’t think about it. First of all the majority of the drug traffickers and users in this country are White. And the vast majority of the money made is by White people. And they aren’t getting it by traveling to the Black community. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of dumb Whites who do that, sometimes in broad daylight, but the majority get it from people like this young group of people who were selling it out of their homes.
