‘The fans will be happy with this rendition.’
Veteran actor Richard T. Jones has built an impressive and versatile resume and is one of the most gifted character actors in town.
Jones made his first significant onscreen appearance in 1993, with a bit part as Ike Turner Jr. in the drama “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” and continued to make his mark in the thriller “Kiss the Girls,” the pop-culture hit “Ally McBeal,” and Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married.”
Fast forward to today where Jones joins Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche and Ken Watanbe, as US Navy Captain Russell Hampton in the latest reboot of the iconic blockbuster “Godzilla,” opening this weekend in North America
EURweb spoke with Jones, who talks about his early fandom, auditioning for the movie and loving this rendition.
Jones’ character in “Godzilla”  is a by-the-book captain of a key naval vessel in the movie. However, when Jones auditioned for the role he admits that he knew nothing about the movie he was auditioning for.
“It was very hush, hush. They just said it was a big movie and if you get it you will be excited,” Jones reveals.
“During my audition, I didn’t really understand what I was talking about during the scene. I would ask questions and they wouldn’t tell me much. All I knew, was this was a military guy and I was out for something. I used a little common sense and God was on my side with that.”
Although, growing up in Japan gave Jones his first introduction to Godzilla as a young boy, Jones assures us that his background did nothing to land him the gig. On top of that, he never learned to speak Japanese.
“It didn’t help me at all. I was born in Kobe, Japan. I don’t speak Japanese, however, my father and my brother speak it,” Jones shares. “Actually, my dad played baseball there, so, he’s very popular in Japan. My brother went back in his twenties to play basketball and it (the language) came back to him within 3 months and he never took a class. It’s like total recall.”
When Jones learned that he landed the coveted role and that it was for a Godzilla reboot he was in shock.
“It was still kind of hush -hush. When I got the script and read it, I knew it was going to be something special,” Jones says proudly. “The way Gareth (Edwards) the director hid Godzilla and then revealed him,” Jones says with anticipation. “The fans will be happy with this rendition.”
Jones is currently in Louisiana playing a U.S. Marshall alongside Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon and actress Sofia Vergara in a buddy comedy movie loosely title “Don’t Mess with Texas.” How’s that for an epic come up.
