28 of 36 homicides Black lives…May murders all Black males

UnderAttack2.jpg
With six homicides taking place in Allegheny County during the month of May, which is less than the 10 that took place during the same month in 2013, all of them were Black males, half of them under the age of 21.
May is seen as a month for honoring mothers, but with the six killings that occurred this month, a few just too devastating to even imagine, it may soon be known as the month for taking away their babies.
In May 2013, among the 10 homicides that took place, one was the tragic death of Marcus White Jr., also known as “Baby Marcus,” who was killed when he was senselessly shot while at a community gathering with his family. Still, to this day, no one has ever been charged with his death. Well, like the death of Baby Marcus, yet another baby was killed in the month of May, robbing him of his life, even before he was able to truly begin it, when his 15-year-old mother was shot multiple times while she answered a knock at her front door. At least one of those shots hit her stomach, killing her 31-week-old fetus who saved her life by slowing down the traveling bullet when it hit him.
There was also the shooting death of an 18-year-old Black male who was killed only a week before he was  due to graduate from University Prep high school. He was going to attend college in the fall. While he may have lived much longer than the others, he too was robbed of his life, not being given a chance to reach his full potential.
The spreading epidemic of Black on Black homicides was unbearable when it was just taking the lives of our young adults, but now it has become even more infuriating because its reaching into our cribs, strollers and even the womb.
It is time for more people to become infuriated, disgusted and down right mad, because that is when action begins to take place. These young lives are our futures. It has been, and now is, a time for action; we cannot continue to give our future away to senseless killings.
As part of an ongoing effort to heighten awareness about the effects of murder in Black communities, the New Pittsburgh Courier will compile a list of homicides in the County each month. It is our hope that as the list of victims grows, so will a true understanding of how these lost lives affect the mental health, economic well being and self-images of the region’s Black neighborhoods.
Out of the 36 murders, thus far, in 2014—28 were Black and 25 were Black men.
