Atlanta Dream’s Erika de Souza named Eastern Conference Player of the Week

To further illustrate the fact that the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream is a formidable and balanced team that doesn’t rely on all-world superstar Angel McCoughtry to will the team to wins alone, center Erika de Souza’s fantastic play has earned her WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors.
De Souza has been blazing on the court as of late, particularly in the past week. She averaged 23.5 points on 66.7 percent field goal shooting, and added 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. She was also a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line in two impressive victories.
The prolific scorer netted 27 points, snagged two rebounds and blocked two shots in a victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on June 3, and then came back with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and collected 2 steals in a 97-59 trouncing of the Chicago Sky, an Atlanta Dream record for margin of victory.
The Dream is tied for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 5-3 record.
For the season, de Souza is displaying her all-around prowess as she leads the league in field goal percentage (.670) and is the only player in the WNBA to rank in the top six in scoring (18.5 – sixth), rebounding (9.5 – fifth) and blocks (1.4 – fourth).
De Souza is also a pillar of consistency for the talent laden squad. She has totaled at least 14 points and eight rebounds in every game this season for The Dream.
Superstar Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi was named the Western Conference Player of the Week.
According to team officials, the candidates for WNBA Players of the Week in the Eastern Conference were Chicago’s Elena Delle Donne, Connecticut’s Alex Bentley, Indiana’s Erlana Larkins and New York’s Cappie Pondexter.
The candidates in the Western Conference were Minnesota’s Seimone Augustus, San Antonio’s Sophia Young-Malcolm, Seattle’s Crystal Langhorne and Tulsa’s Skylar Diggins.
