Birthday Celebration
JUNE 12—Gwen’s Girls will host a Gwen Elliot Birthday Celebration from 6-8 p.m. at Gwen’s Girls, 711 West Commons, North Side. This is a community wide event celebrating what would be the 70th birthday of the late Gwen Elliot. This event will allow those who knew Elliot, and who have benefited from her compassion and generosity, an opportunity to gather and share memories. Registration is required. Day of Unity
JUNE 14—Seshemet Community Council and Sankofa United will host A Day of Unity in the Community from 1-6:30 p.m. at the Greater Pittsburgh Coliseum, 7310 Frankstown Ave., Homewood. Guest speaker Dr. Umar Johnson, educator, psychologist and Pan Africanist, will speak on the topic “The Academic War Against Black Boys.” There will be a Q & A session following the lecture. Rack-O Tournament
JUNE 14—The McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center will host its 2014 Summer Program Series at the Heritage Center, 1832 Arboretum Dr., McKeesport. The series will begin with a Rack-O Tournament. Rack-O is a card games developed by McKeesport native Frank Whitehead. This is free and open to the public, and for ages 10-110. Public Meeting
JUNE 18—The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation will host a Public Meeting at 5:30 p.m. at 605 Ross Ave., Wilkinsburg. This meeting is being held to get public comment on the WCDC’s application for Main Street Designation through the Pennsylvania Department of Economic and Community Development’s Main Street Program. Kidney Health Check
JUNE 28—The National Kidney Foundation will host a Kidney Health Check from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty. The event will feature a kidney health survey, body mass index, blood pressure measurements, an individual consultation with a kidney doctor and a wealth of resources. Hair/Nail Show
JUNE 29—Magic Palace Hair Salon will host the Love and Peace Hair/Nail Show Spectacular from 6-10 p.m. at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel, 300 W. Station Square Dr., Station Square. All hair, nail and barber stylists, and vendors are welcomed to join. All participants will receive a trophy and other prizes. For more information, call 412-673-0333.
DHS SummerFood Program
ONGOING—The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will host its annual SummerFood Program at various locations throughout the count. The program provides a free nutritious breakfast and lunch, along with recreational activities, to children up to age 18 as well as eligible individuals with disabilities on weekdays.
