Dr. Morris Edward Turner, who practiced in Obstetrics & Gynecology for more than 37 years, recently passed away. He was 65 years old. Even though his main office was in East Liberty he had 25 other office locations.
Turner had been a force in women’s health since he earned his degree more than 30 years ago. A South Carolina native, Turner attended Morehouse College on a partial academic scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s in biology and chemistry in 1969. The same year, he was recruited to earn his graduate certificate from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. After graduating from the school in 1973, Turner completed a residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at Magee Women’s Hospital, where he met Dr. Robert Kisner and formed a plan to start a program focused on the city’s Black community. What started with outreach programs through nurse practitioners became the first Black specialty group practice in East Liberty, which was opened by Kisner, Dr. Robert Thompson and Turner in 1976.
Turner continued to operate his private practice in East Liberty and was a full-time member of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services. Through the school, he conducted outreach services to disadvantaged communities throughout the county. Over the course of his career Turner served as president of Magee Women’s Hospital’s medical staff, was a member of the Allegheny County Medical Society’s board of directors, was medical director of Adagio Health, chief of gynecological services at McKeesport Hospital and medical director of Allegheny Reproductive Health Center.
He was named a New Pittsburgh Courier Man of Excellence in 2012.
Turner and his wife, Verena, are parents of three boys, one girl and have six grandchildren.
Services for Dr. Turner will be held at the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, 271 Paulson Avenue: viewing Monday, July 7, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the funeral Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.  Professional services are entrusted to Coston Funeral Home.
