On May 17 at The Georgetown Center, in Pleasant Hills, more than 200 enjoyed an afternoon with The Harmony Club of Homestead as they presented the Dorothy Lance-Vivian Weems Annual Scholarship Luncheon. With Valerie McDonald Roberts as a delightful mistress of ceremony, The Harmony Club celebrated 115 years of charitable work in the community.
Organized in 1899 as The Ladies Aid of Homestead, it was most appropriate that they showcased the play “Imagine the Possibilities: From Slavery to the White House” by Karen Harris Brooks.
The play celebrates the African-American woman, past, present and future. It tells a brief story of the trails blazed by Black women in the United States. The cast included portrayals of Harriet Tubman, Mamie Till Mobley (mother of Emmett Till), Rosa Parks, Dorothy Height, Michelle Obama and more. The program also included an outstanding musical selection performed by Angelique Strothers. The talented cast included members of The Harmony Club: Aldine Coleman, Patricia Pugh Mitchell, Marlene Murphy, Elayne Arrington, Diane Foy and LaRue Grinage. Also performing were Aliyah McEnheimer, Elysha Newell and Keira Randolph, while Rev. Doyle Bursey was the voice of God.
The afternoon concluded with their traditional scholarship presentation to two deserving students. Scholarships were presented to Sharvel Pulliam, a Steel Valley High School graduate, and Daysiah Foy, a West Mifflin Area High School graduate. Foy plans to attend Lincoln University and major in child psychology. Pullium will attend Penn State Greater Allegheny and major in finance.
