The Fourth of July holiday normally consists of family, friends, food and fellowship, but for two Pittsburgh families, the holiday weekend also included a fatal shooting and stabbing.
Authorities are still searching for the suspect who shot a 30-year-old Black male to death during a backyard barbecue at his Homewood home on July 4.
Kaamil Arnold, of Homewood, was shot multiple times after a confrontation broke out between he and another male who came to his Tioga Street home.
After shooting Arnold the shooter fled.
Police have issued an arrest warrant for Zachary Threats, 36, of McKees Rocks. He is being charged with criminal homicide, carrying a gun without a license and burglary, among other charges.
Authorities identified Threats through a police computer database of nicknames and witness identification.
The Tribune Review has reported that Threats is currently awaiting trial for two other incidents that occurred in 2013 and 2012.
Then, two days later, a 22-year-old Black male was fatally stabbed in a Fineview home after an altercation with his mother’s boyfriend.
Police arrested 43-year-old Michael Monroe on July 6 after he allegedly stabbed Derek Frye, of Fineview, at the home located in the 1700 block of Belleau Drive.
Monroe allegedly had an altercation with Frye’s mother, choking her and then leaving the room. According to other reports, Monroe returned to the room with a bloody knife and threatened the female. When she fled, she saw her son unresponsive.
Monroe then fled the scene and police issued a Be On Look Out alert. He was later apprehended while driving on Mt. Oliver Street.
He is currently in the Allegheny County Jail and has been charged with criminal homicide, simple assault and terroristic threats.
This holiday weekend’s homicides, however, are nothing like that of Chicago’s toll which included 82 shot, with 14 of them resulting in death.
Thus far in 2014, there have been 45 homicides in Allegheny County, 29 in the city and 16 in the surrounding areas.
