PITTSBURGH—Statement by Dr. Linda Lane, Superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools, on the approval of the Commonwealth’s 2014-15 Budget by Governor Tom Corbett:
“We are concerned that the State’s Basic Education Subsidy has had little or no increase for several years, with the rising cost of virtually all areas of the budget.
We are pleased to receive some increase to Special Education and the additional $1,206,188 that the District will receive from Ready to Learn Block Grant.  In alignment with our Whole Child, Whole Community Plan, the Ready to Learn Block Grant helps support our plan to ensure every child is reading on grade level by 3rd grade.  A part of the grant will employ Early Literacy Specialists to support K-2 teachers in literacy instruction and facilitate student interventions.
We are extremely appreciative of the Governor’s support for the Ready to Learn Block Grant and the steady support that the Pittsburgh Legislative Delegation provides on behalf of Public Schools in Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth.“
