 Town Hall Meeting
JULY 31—State Rep. Ed Gainey will host “Education vs. Incarceration: A Town Hall Meeting with state Rep. Ed Gainey” from 6-8 p.m. at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Homewood-Brushton Branch, 7107 Hamilton Ave., Homewood. Black Family Reunion
JULY 31—Community Empowerment Association Inc. will host the Black Family Reunion & Cultural Weekend at the CEA Arts, Culture, Training Institute, 7120 Kelly St., Homewood. The theme for the four-day event is “Quest for Social-economic Justice and Equality-Improving the Quality of Life for the Black Family.” This is a weekend of great food, music, information, health screenings, discussions and fun for the entire family. There will be a Hip-Hop Concert, a Basketball Tournament, Workshops, a White Party and a concert in Schenley Park with Con Funk Shun and Howard Hewitt. Thelma Lovette Memorial Service
AUG. 1—The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh will host a Public Memorial Service for Thelma Lovette at 4:30 p.m. at the Thelma Lovette YMCA, 2114 Centre Ave., Hill District. Thelma Lovette, a community champion, died May 24 in Arizona. She will be honored for legacy. Reverend Dr. Johnnie Monroe will officiate and Rev. Dr. Ronald Peters will be the guest speaker. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Thelma Lovette YMCA Memorial Fund. For more information, call 412-315-0990.
Enrichment Lecture Seminar
AUG. 2—Seshemet Community Council will host its Enrichment Study Group Lecture Series 2014 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the CCAC Homewood Brushton Center, 701 N. Homewood Ave., Homewood. The topic will be “Black Politics and Organizing/Mobilizing Politically.” Khalid Raheem, founder of the New Afrikan Independence Party.” This event is free and open to the public, and seating is limited. Unity Day Gathering
AUG. 2—The Northside Old Timers will host its 8th Annual Unity Day Gathering in West Park, North Ave., North Side. The two-day event will include a Children’s March Against Violence and Praise in the Park. No alcohol or open grills are permitted in the park. For more information, call 412-238-8630.
Grand Re-opening

Summer Fun Fest
AUG. 9—The Pittsburgh Chapter of NOBLE will host its Hot Summer Fun Fest from 12-8 p.m. at the Sherwood Event Center, 400 Sherwood Rd., Wilkinsburg. DHS SummerFood Program
ONGOING—The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will host its annual SummerFood Program at various locations throughout the count. The program provides a free nutritious breakfast and lunch, along with recreational activities, to children up to age 18 as well as eligible individuals with disabilities on weekdays. Summer Experience
ONGOING—The Adonai Center for Black Males will host its Summer Experience from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 8, Black males in the 9th and 10th grade will learn about Black History, Vision and Goal Setting, Strategic Planning and Thinking, Leadership and Team Development, and more. STEM Summer Program
ONGOING—The Homewood Renaissance Association will host its STEM Afterschool Summer Program from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Homewood House, 7130 Frankstown Ave., Homewood. The program will run through Aug. 8 and include activities such as playing sports, creating music, field trips, swimming and rewind tutoring. The last week will include a trip to Surf City in Detroit Michigan. Registration is required.
